Now, I have a dictionary I can easily use when reading books.

Talend Roadshow

Yesterday I went to the Talend Roadshow. 3 hours nicely spent and the it worthed the time and traffic jam. No money involved as it was free.
I liked a lot that it was a "hands on work" seminar and not a marketing presentation. Benjamin, the guy who presented the product (btw: the open source version), had a good IT background and this was handy.
So, they provided us with some laptops, a practice book (5 exercises) and the Talend User Manual. The nice think was that Benjamin actually showed us how to use the most important Talend component: tMap. It took my one full day (at work, so just between meetings and other stuff) to understand tMap and Talend and I was unsuccessful. why? too less time, too less tutorials on "how to start" using it. So, at that moment, I ended up using Kettle (from Spoon) just because another collegue has the knowledge already.
After the yesterday Talend Roadhow I must say that I like better Talend than Kettle because:
1. I can debug it (put a breakpoint on the java code)
2. with Traces enabled, I can see on real time the data being processed (really handy)

But, perhaps, if I went to a Kettle Readshow (nope, it doesn't exist) then Kettle would acquire more points also.

My conclusions about the Talend Roadshow:
1. it's free
2. the person presenting it (Benjamin) was one of the French founders (I think), so an IT person, no marketing boring presentation
3. all the IT questions got an answer
4. we actually had to work with the product
5. too bad there was not indepth intro about the facts/dimensions components; but I guess that's because the attendees should have already know DataMarts.

So, if you get the chance, GO CHECK IT OUT.

PS: I will try now to go my kettle jobs in Talend and see which is easier to implement/faster/better debugging.

Flex integrated with Spring in Eclipse. Myth or reality?

One afternoon spent on integrating flex with spring and eclipse. Myth BUSTED.
Here are the steps you can follow:
1. use this site Using BlazeDS with Spring for figuring out how to make flex work with Spring on a server and make some samples work. You will discover a new buzz-word: BlazeDS. There are other tutorials too, but they forget an important thing: you must put .swf files on the server!!! (.swf is the bytecode of the .mxml files). If you are a flex novice and you don't want to lose 2hours for such a small important thing, use the mentioned tutorial. (note: the build.xml for compiling the .mxml files into .swf files has a mistake: points to the wrong flex_ant jar)
2. thinking of how will you do session-management? Well, there is no client-session in flex. Actually client-session is a hack. Read here.
3. I guess the next question is: what about security? the answer is here.
4. if you are happy that your samples are working and you understood the above blogs, go celebrate with champagne cause you reached dead-end. Now you must probably be releasing you need a flex-IDE. Adobe made Flex 3 SDK free; this means "in theory" you can use whatever IDE you want, even Eclipse. Well, guess again and read this: Flex 3 SDK + Eclipse: an encouraging union, especially these lines:

"Adobe does not ship the XML schema definition file with the “free” SDK. Read that line again. Yeah. I really was *incredibly* pissed off about that. This is basically a complete refusal to allow another application to understand anything in the flex realm." [by Leona]

Leona managed in the end to make it work with an old version of xsd 1.5. But it looks a whole lot of work to make eclipse the perfect IDE for flex. It's 2:34AM and not in the mood. And for what? So that I have to fully learn an entire new language: actionscript? Sorry, not my target right now. Just wanted to put live an idea and at this hour it sounds more easier with a drag-an-drop functionality ===> this means buy Flex Builder. 500$. Sorry, we an in economic crisis.

Conclusion:
- I only wanted to do something cool with images like PicLens. I've googled 2 mornings for time-to-time (from work) for an ajax solution, didn't find it. Must have been blind :) 5 minutes ago found this: http://www.dhteumeuleu.com/. Go to Gallery and pick Image FLow (diapo). Already subscribed to newsletter and donated 30$ dollars to Gerard Ferrandez. I think I should give more. So, I'm going with this solution. At least I know this will work; with flex I wasn't even sure how am I going to do that photo gallery. Founded a flex example on net (for 90$), but not sure was really what I wanted.

Maybe someday, not in the near future, I will get over my frustration and start again with flex (if it's still a buzzword)

This is a tricky puzzle: Digital Digits (the one about clocks). The correct answer is: 34

You've figured out for sure:
01:11, 02:22, 03:33, 04:44, 05:55 and 10:00, 11:10, 11:11, 11:12, 11:13, 11:14, 11:15, 11:16, 11:17, 11:18, 11:19. => 16 combinations. And you have to count them twice as the puzzle asks you for all the combinations appearing during a day => 32 combinations.

The trick is that this is a 12-hour clock and "The indication of noon and midnight in the 12-hour system is disputed." (check Wikipedia). Looks like Layton's 12-hour clock displays the noun and midnight as being 12:00 and not 00:00 => 12:22 combination exists and appears twice.

32 + 2 (twice 12:22) = 34

OLD: Finally, I found the solution. But honestly it has no reason! Because if somebody does a typo, he will use the same pattern for the following mistake. If you type a lot of time using a keyword (which everybody does in this era) your hands work magically without you looking and if you miss one key with one button to the left than all the text is going to be one left-key mistake.

UPDATE: Brittany is right: looking carefully at the chocolate bits, you can find the answer:

- 1. missing chunk up letter G => (check keyboard the letter on top G) => T
- 2. no missing chunk on letter E => E
- 3. missing chunk left letter C => X
- 4. missing chunk left Y => T
... and so on ===> GECY NW = TEXT ME

professor layton and the curios village

I don't like Nintendo games at all. Especially not those shooter games, those dress me up, color-me and how pretty I can jump through the grass fields games. Yacht! I've bought my DS Lite only for the Brain Age Training, but after 2 weeks I was totally, fully bored. There is nothing pleasent in receiving more difficult words to figure out and such a black-white front-end. I am a human from the TV era! I need color and not monochromatics.

It's my fully pleasure to announce the best game on DS: Proffesor Layton and the Curios Village: http://professorlaytonds.com/. It's really great:
- nice story (no monsters or crazy shooters)
- fully colored
- great usability (could improve): the long click though dialogs are substituted by cartoons movie with real actor voices. Bright idea! I hate when I have to read what one character is saying then click next, then read what the next character is saying and so on... It's waisting my time and I might get RSI... Bravo, Layton team!
- great game goal: solve as many puzzles as possible!!! Everybody has the human instinct to prove himself and to learn in the same time. Puzzles are a great solution for this.

There are a lot of puzzles on net, but nobody put them all together in such a nice story like Professor Layton team.

I'm looking forward to the next 2 games within the serie:
- "Professor Layton and The Devil's Box"
- "Professor Layton and The Final Time Journey"
Sadly, they are not in english yet :((

volleyball season over

Last night we had our last game ... we lost with 1-3 sets, but we played far more better than other times. yupi!!
We are as a team than at the beginning of the season: we actually yield for the ball, ask for passes and trust the other team players.

And I concluded: I can attack now... not too hard though, but it scores!!!... and my right elbow has its own brain. It just decides himself to try and get the ball...and he fails everytime. I told you: listen to your master! But him no and no....

So the season it over :((... Looking forward for the next one!

There are two theories of the nature of work: the Humanistic theory and the Commodity theory. Which one does it apply to you?

Humanistic theory:
Work is a natural way of expending accumalated bodily energy. It is healthy, productive and valuable in itself. People enjoy work because it is healthy and fulfilling and because they seek through work to create a higher for of society. This applies to jobs implying more individual choice and autonomy.

Commodity theory:
Work is a commodity to be sold for the maximum return. Labour has no intrinsic (direct) value other than as a means of obtaining goods and services. No one works unless they have to. The job ends at 5 o'clock.

My work went through both of theories at some moment in past. Now I am somewhere in betwwen, but I still bring work home ... more humanistic it seems...

We - the outsiders

Dedication: For all my best friends not yet married... that makes exactly 2(and they used to be 5)

Everybody is getting married!

First it was the high-school marriage wave, now it's the university marriage wave! I have nothing against married people... But what about us - the rest? The unmarried 25 old generation?

We do exist! And we do not want to get married yet!... Because we didn't find mister right yet, because we don't quit want small monsters yet, we don't want to depend on somebody, we aren't prepared to the couple only talks, we can't give up to the single party-all-night-long life! Because we don't know what we want yet! ... Are we the next outsiders generation?

Are we still normal persons if we are not married yet? Do we still have marriage potential? Or are we destined to die with the cat, looking at used-to-be photos?

If everybody is getting married now, who will we find at 30 years old? The ever single guys? The mother-for-always guys? The afraid to commit guys? The workaholics? The old ones? Or, in the best case, the divorced ones? :) [thinking]

And where will we find them from now on? In general, couples start during high-school, university or friends' marriages! The high-school years... gone; the university-years... gone, the marriages done, next come the baby-showers (there are only couples)... So, what's next for us? The funerals? :))

And will the single status still be cool at 30 years old? Or does it sound better divorced? :))) ok, I need a divorced

Last Saturday I've been to RAI Amsterdam Contemporary Art Gallery: www.kunstrai.nl
It was interesting for the 15 euro enterce paied! Or, in other words, really happy that we decided to go with the tour-for-dummies.

It's fascinating to see the country art differences: europe - fighting being childish paintings and game-computers screen desktops, japan - manga paintings, india - half yes, half no.

The guide-tour said that we must look behind the colours, to see the painting. Does this mean that we should always focus on the idea, and forget about the form? Does this mean that the normal brush-paintings are old-fashioned? Then why do we still find Rembrand canvases to be the greatest? (note: greatest and not expansive, as the comtemporary-work standard price is 3600 euro)

I saw one great idea: The Unknown Women = tens of photos of unknown women with the back-side full of information about famous women. Tens of photos of perhaps great women who had the misfortune to be born in a wrong century! I took a photo, I read it's back-side and wonder what impresses me most: the deep-concentrated face or the written lines about the woman who influenced YOGA...(Scary, I do not remember the name to none of them!)...

There was still a young painter with superb old-fashioned-portrets! They were all already sold out! So, it's not always the idea! Even "aceiasi Marie cu alta palarie" can still be great (if the heat is on-fashion)!

Tring to find other amazing-art-works (didn't succed), I ended up looking after gays and trying to figure out who are the artists... Not too bad for 15 euros.

[P.S. Definition:] interesting art = hated it, but I feel non-contemporary-intelligent if I say it.

women in IT

Think about all the women working in IT. Some of them are really great: I know one who leads a team of almost 20 developers, one who is the best in her 15-developers team and they are great (and they are in fashion). But I also know the rest: who still wonder if this is the job that really make them happy?...
So, as a woman, is working in IT like Shrimps at lunch?... They are great in the Shrimps-cocktail! But not in a day by day meal. They have to be the frontdish or the desert, otherwise you'll die from hunger.

But still, suppose destiny (= parents, a high-school crush) wants us IT women, where do we actually end up? Well, you've got 2 answers: web-design or machine-things. Being in the web-design we still keep the feminine aura (fashion, design, colors, writing, intuition), but we are not in the "boiling area" of making the "IT move".
And if we decide to make the IT-world move (= dealing with servers, architecture decisions) do we look as if we lost your feminine side? Do the others start to see us as the work-body and therefor we start to become a woman-pants? Or were we actually a man-brain trapped in a woman body and never realized?

Ieri, am avut un vis urat de tot... se facea ca Pamantul avea sa dispara. Stiam ca in cateva ore nu vom mai exista: eram cu parintii mei si cu fratele meu si eram din nou mici copii. Si era bine ca eram impreuna, dar era ingrozitor gandindu-ne ca in 2 ore nu ne vom mai revedea. Am inceput sa plang in somn.
Un cosmar f urat: nu era infricosator faptul ca vom disparea cu totii, ci ca avem exact 2 ore de a ne vorbi, si apoi nimica (ciudat: am visat acel nimica: era ca un punct, ca o poveste care are un sfarsit inchis)

PS: poveste cu sfarsit inchis = poveste in care eroul moare si cititorul nu poate sa-si imagineze o continuare.

My first painting

Sambata aceasta am pictat si asta dupa 10 ani! Prima data cand am pictat pe panza si folosind culori de ulei. Chiar a fost placut ... un sentiment pe care il uitasem demult. Ce am pictat? ... cum se vede mai sus... un mar (cum bate soarele din dreapta). Are 2 greseli destul de mari (in ochii mei), dar mi se pare o treaba bunicica pt inceput!

This Saturday I painted and this after 10 years! It's the first time when I use oil colors and real canvas. It was nicy ... a feeling that I have forgotten for a long time. What did I paint?! ... well look up... a small apple (with light and shadow). It does have 2 big mistakes, but I think it's a good work for the beginning!

Deze Zaterdag ik heb geschilderd en dit na 10 jaar! Het is de eerste keer dat waneer ik oliekleuren en op canvas geschildered. Het was leuke ... een gevoel dat ik voor een lange tijd heb vergeten. Wat heb ik geschilderd? ... kijk omhoog ... een klein apple (met licht en shaduw). Het heeft 2 grote fouten, maar ik denk dat het is een goed werk voor de begin!

This is a shocking conclusion: if ~20% views are done with empty cache then definitely we should pay more attention on not having to0 many HTTP round-trips in a page. Easy to say and... to do (if you think a bit more).
Ok, now let's assume you have structured your front-end in a maintenable way and more: using static includes, you've managed to have just a few HTTP request(1 html, 1 main.css - huge one (as it statically include other css files), 1 javascript - a bug one and 5 images) , but what do you do with the user experience? [trick situation, isn't it?]
If you have a nice roll-over horizontal menu (nicely created with lists and css), an end-user with a slow connection, will see first the menu ordered in a normal list and after a few milisec the list turns into a nice menu => not a nice user-experience!!! My 2 cents: load you menu.css first and then the main.css...

true! But I know nothing about cars! It's been 4 months since I last opened the front-part of the car to see the motor and all those strange pieces (that make no sense)... The sad thing: I had 2 car incidents in 6 months and I am bad at parking!

I work as a Java Developer and yet I want to be just a small animal from a fairytale...
true! I am a Java Web Developer. I took my SCWCD (Sun Certified Web Component Developer) exam this year with 91% score! (it was a nice surprise for me too)... I like working as developer and I have a lot of ideas just coming through my head, but somehow I don't enough time to put them all into action. And there's a dream trying to become true... working in Flash.
Working as a software developer, should make me a really serious person. And that I have accomplished in only 2 years, but not totally... I still like to listen to fairytales and watch cartoons! When I was about 9 years old I told my mother that I never want to grow up. It seems that my guardian angel didn't listen to me (now I am 1.74 tall => I am big), but somehow I managed to keep the childhood inside me.

I love to see happy people and yet by my actions I hurt people...
true! "I love to see happy people" this sounds like a Miss Contest speech :) But happy people (especially children) make you smile. We always to do our best to make people happy, and yet we so much fail! I loved somebody, and I was loved by somebody and yet I hurt his feelings so much.

I want a big family and yet I now live far-away from my family...
Family is by far the most important thing. It is that person that always waits for you (hoping that tomorrow you'll make a surprise and visit him) and always has the same words prepared for you "It will be alright!"... I've heard it so many times and yet everytime is sound sweeter...

I have hopes and yet nobody taught me what to do with them...
Should I fight for them or should I just let the universe take care of them? You answer to this!

Once, a colleague told me: "Always when you come to my desk, you make me forget about all my problems as you have a smile on your face, a joke or a nice thing to say!" I think that it the sweetest thing I ever heard (thank you - you know who you are)... Yes, I almost always have a smile on my face, but that's because I am surrounded by nice people... And this is true for each one of us! We are all influenced by the others - whether we like it or not! But what does it happen when you are alone? That is the only moment when you can realize whether you are a nice person or not!

And yet the person that knew me that best told that my skype description says all about me "just a crazy girl"...
